Packing Light for Scotia Con.

It’s a bit of a nightmare packing for any furry convention when you need to travel light. Well, that’s me this weekend!
I’m getting a lift off two of my friends and between their suitcases and two fursuits, there isn’t a tonne of space for little old me. But that’s okay, I really REALLY appreciate a lift up to Scotland, especially with how unreliable the train services are currently.
Hard decisions
This time round I am attending ScotiaCon but also dealing in the Dealer’s Den on the Monday.
I have to fit everything in to a single 20kg suitcase. So sadly I’m going to have to sacrifice my fursuit in the packing.
As a general rule if I’m dealing at a convention I won’t pack my fursuit, it’s just too much stuff. It’s a shame but it’ll be fine! I really enjoy dealing and being around other creators in the community.
Packing for a day at the Dealer’s Den
I need to pack light, so I’m only dealing for the Monday at ScotiaCon. As such I’m being smart about what I’m taking. Here’s some of the ways I’ve managed to reduce the amount of stuff I’m taking.
- No big display frames. If I was dealing for the whole weekend I might have gone ALL OUT with my display, but my limitations mean I am taking less display stuff, and I’m going to make do with strategically placed A4 frames with my logo and prices on.
- No paper stock. Prints, cards and magazines are HEAVY. They also don’t sell fantastically, so I’m not taking any paper media to sell, only lanyards, wristbands, stickers and other small merchandise items.
- Planned Profit. What I mean here is that I am only taking an amount of merch that is likely to sell on the day. I have stock of thousands of items. I am taking no more than 2k worth of stuff. This equates to around 50 lanyards, 50 wristbands and 50 other smaller bits. It’s unlikely I will sell up. I decided on 2k of profit because I would be happy with making around 1k on the day, and I doubled it just in case it goes amazingly well. There’s absolutely no need for me to take more stuff.
Based off this I have managed to pack my suitcase around half full, leaving another half for four days worth of clothes, which would be easier if I didn’t sport overalls every day. But… That’s my own silly choice.
I’m also packing essentials like plushies and some free pins to give out. It’ll be a really fun weekend and hopefully all my crap fits in the car, wish me luck!
